Move your ship!

So, while on a drive down to Blouberg beachfront last Sunday morning, we came across this group of people busy "protesting" towards the Seli 1 which ran aground 2 years ago.  It had been sitting in the same spot for 2 years and apparently all the oil and fuel taken off but what happened last weekend?  It broke up and spilled oil all along our beautiful coast.  Quite an eyesore!

The Old Post Office market - Muizenberg

I've been wanting to go and check out the market at the Old Post Office in Muizenberg for some time now (I think it's the sister market to the one in Hope Street, Gardens?).  It’s open every Sunday from 9am-3pm.

I finally dragged Guy out of his garden yesterday and convinced him to come with me…

We found that is quite a bit smaller than Hope Street and nothing much to buy (besides a small selection of cakes, food, hand lotions and a few curio's).   There is a divine sitting area outside with a few tables overlooking Surfer’s Corner which is nice if you buy some goodies inside and want to sit and chill in the sun and watch the surfers (on a sunny day of course).

There wasn’t a beer garden and no champagne either like the Hope Street market (sob, sob). However, there was a little restaurant inside where Guy and I decided to go.   It was quite full so we sat by the window, looking up onto Boyes Drive, watched the rain and read the travel sections of the different Sunday papers dreaming where we’d like to go on holiday next…

We started off with cappucinos which were almost as good and expensive as Vida and then we had their lunch special - R40 for either lasagne with salad, spag bol, thai green curry or quiche (that’s the menu – the end) WITH a glass of either red or white wine!  Bonus!  And you go and help yourself to the wine from this little table with wine bottles and glasses so you can fill it right to the top (and not get a half-glass like you get everywhere nowadays).

All in all, it was a good but if you decide to go there, don’t expect much. Definitely worth the visit though – even if you just pop in en route to Muizenberg beachfront or if you are going to the Empire CafĂ© next door.

West Coast Ostrich Farm

It surprises me how many people that live in Cape Town don't know about the West Coast Ostrich Farm - on the N7, about 30 minutes from the CBD/15 minutes from Table View.

On a sunny, wind-less day it is so nice and relaxing to go and sit up there... I say "up there" as it is on a hill top with magnificent views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic.  There is a nice restaurant (with a fireplace inside during winter), a jungle gym for the kiddies, Scratch Patch, curio shop, ostrich museum and ostrich tours (where you'll see ostriches of course, a few huge tortoises, a turtle and some crocs too)!  I'd really recommend making a turn there, have some lunch, browse around, have a few bottles of wine, relax and unwind.

Oh yes, there is also the smallest fully-grown ostrich in the world there which has recently made it into the Guinness Book of World Records (you can see in the one picture below his size vs Guy)

Eastern Food Bazaar

There's a great place to get delicious and affordable curry takeaways (or sit-down) in Cape Town CBD.  It's a hidden gem and it's called Eastern Bazaar and is in Darling Street.  It is basically a big warehouse with all types of curries (chicken or lamb breyani, butter chicken, etc), pizza's, schwarma's and the list goes on...  For R50 (butter chicken, garlic naan and a roti) you can feed 2 people and be full!  Very nice if you don’t feel like cooking (like me tonight) and take home to eat. 31/08

At last!

FINALLY - it's here!  I've eventually managed to create a space to put my thoughts, findings and whatever else down but mostly the awesome finds that are to come in and around Cape Town... Watch this space! 23/08
